BACKGROUND
ZDA worked with a diverse group of Meriter-UnityPoint Foundation staff to design therapeutic and horticultural therapy gardens. Our design is the product of detailed research into needs of the patients, adolescents dealing with severe mental illness.
Features of the garden provide patients opportunities for choice including a number of seating areas, a looped walking path, and lawn. The variety of plants and textures are safe yet stimulating to the senses. This design allows for group therapy sessions to occur outdoors, beyond the sterile setting of a hospital.
Working with the staff horticultural therapist, ZDA developed a space that features an edible garden and plants that engage all senses of the patient.
TESTIMONIAL
“This is…the most beautiful and restorative space. Walking through [the garden] brought tears to my eyes.”
