A SENSE OF PLACE

This project involved developing a complete Master Plan and siting a new dwelling on an 11-acre piece of property overlooking Waunakee Marsh. In addition to the Master Plan, ZDA developed a complete land management and maintenance plan for the property including budgeting and phasing. Environmentally sensitive and unique management areas include an extinct limestone quarry, mature oak woodlands, a remnant goat prairie with a striking display of native Shooting Stars, and various degrees of old-field; these areas account for all but 3/4 of an acre of the site. Special care was given to salvaging glaciated limestone that was excavated on-site during the digging of the foundation and was used to create unique pathways connecting the home and writer’s cottage. The 900-foot driveway was designed to re-use an historic haul road, allowing for the preservation of existing pre-settlement oaks, and requiring no retaining walls for the 10% grade.
