COMMUNITY RESOURCE PARK

ZDA helped develop Troy Gardens into a nationally recognized model of urban sustainability. Troy combines affordable housing, a children’s garden and program, community garden plots, a CSA Farm, flexible community gathering spaces, and restored natural areas, including an interpretive trail, restored tall-grass prairie, and woodlands.

Our designs provided the framework for Community Groundworks to develop their Troy Kids’ Garden program and provide gardening, arts, nutrition, and environmental education to over 1,000 young people from the Madison area.

In addition to the Master Plan, ZDA developed a comprehensive Land Management Plan funded by the DNR and is now used as a prototype for similar projects.

TESTIMONIAL

The benefits of the master planning and garden design are highlighted on Community Groundworks’ website: (http://www.communitygroundworks.org/what-we-do/youth-grow-local/kids-gardening).

“By growing the garden and exploring Troy’s natural areas, youth develop a connection with nature that is often difficult to establish in an urban setting. […] young people at Troy Gardens are given an opportunity to develop an emotional connection to the land.”
