Steven is a third-generation landscape architect following in his father’s footsteps, the late Professor George Ziegler, of the Department of Landscape Architecture, University of Wisconsin-Madison. George had the privilege to study under, and later work for the likes of Franz Aust, William Longenecker, Jens Jensen, and Frank Lloyd Wright. George shared this knowledge and his own acute understanding of Wisconsin plant communities with Steven, introducing him to the art of landscape design at an early age.

In his work, Steven merges the power of art and design with the sciences, both cultural and natural, and with sound engineering practices for proper function. Therefore, blending art-science-engineering. Steven is also a strong believer in “evidence-based design.” His work begins with a thorough examination of the landscape at hand, and a clear articulation of the goals, needs, and constraints of each individual client.

Steven’s experience in the field of landscape architecture and land planning is diverse, spanning over 38 years. His path to the present has lead him through work in landscape construction, environmental research, land planning, landscape design/build, and 9 years to date as Principal of ZDA.

Steven’s combination of design knowledge, planning, and field experience enables him have a hands-on savvy that only instinct and years of practice can allow. Many clients seek him specifically, knowing that their final landscape will be the vision that they created together with Steven, and that they can leave the project entirely in his capable hands.
